JCA Managing Editor
A managing editor hire who will support the day-to-day operations and publication workflows of the Journal of Cultural Analytics at Princeton University's Center for Digital Humanities.
The Journal of Cultural Analytics (JCA) seeks a Managing Editor to support the day-to-day operations of a peer-reviewed, open-access journal at the forefront of computational and data-driven approaches to humanistic inquiry. The Managing Editor will ensure smooth, high-quality publication operations and will be a core member of the editorial team that includes faculty and graduate students at various institutions. JCA is published by the Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) at Princeton University.
This is a part-time, fully remote position offering up to 12 hours per week that will pay a wage of between $40-$50/hour depending on the applicant’s experience. The position is ideal for an experienced editorial professional looking to contribute to a dynamic, interdisciplinary publication.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily editorial operations and coordinate workflow across editors, editorial assistants, copy editors, and typesetters
- Plan and manage editorial calendars, including special issues and short features
- Coordinate with the Janeway platform team on back-end updates, front-end design, and workflow documentation
- Coordinate with the CDH staff on marketing and communications strategy
- Review and approve final content before publication, ensuring alignment with editorial guidelines
- Manage freelance contributors including copy editors, typesetters, and special issue editors
- Generate bi-annual reports for the editorial committee based on publication data
- Develop and maintain editorial policies and procedures
- Assist in hiring and onboarding editorial assistants
- Facilitate regular team meetings and support budget preparation and management
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3 years of editorial experience, including in a senior or management role
- Strong editing, proofreading, and organizational skills
- Comfort working in a digital-first, open-access publishing environment
- Experience with content management systems (familiarity with Janeway, Django a plus)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines, and adapt to evolving workflows
Preferred
- Senior editorial experience
- Management experience
- Background in journalism, communications, quantitative social science, digital humanities, or a related field
- Familiarity with academia and academic work settings
- Familiarity with Crossref, datacite, and best practices in journal publishing
- Familiarity with SEO best practices and content performance analytics
- Demonstrated ability to manage editorial projects, budgets, and cross-functional teams
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required; advanced degree or experience in the humanities or academic publishing is welcome.
