Paul Vierthaler, Associate Faculty Director of the Center for Digital Humanities and Assistant Professor of Chinese Literature and Interdisciplinary Data Science, has received a Fulbright Specialist Program award from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Through the award, he is at National Taiwan University leading educational and training activities in computer science and information technology.

During his visit, Vierthaler is giving a three-part lecture series, delivered in Chinese, on Ming–Qing literary and historical research in the age of AI. The series moves from large language models and multimodal vision models to teaching practice:

  • October 14: “Bringing Data Science and AI into the Chinese Studies Classroom”
  • October 21: “Fine-Tuning Language Models to Detect Shifting Register in Late Imperial Fiction: The Case of the Memorial as Evidence”
  • October 23: “Vision Language Models, Image Collections, and Late Imperial Woodblock Prints: Building Pipelines for Large-Scale Exploratory Analysis for Chinese Print History”

The series is hosted by NTU’s Department of Chinese Literature, Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, and Research Center for Digital Humanities, with the Fulbright Specialist Program and the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan.

Each year, the Fulbright Specialist Program sends more than 400 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad as short-term experts at host institutions. Recipients are selected for their academic and professional achievements and their potential to build lasting partnerships between institutions in the United States and abroad.

Congratulations, Paul!
