Building Bridges with Data

How do we ethically engage with physical (print) archives in the 21st century? How do we access, create, and maintain archives for global change? In short, how do we build transcontinental bridges across cultures and institutions through a shared interest in archival data?

On Friday, April 12, the Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) will host a day-long symposium on “Building Bridges with Data” that addresses these issues with a series of talks and roundtable discussions around how archives — and archival data — allow for the creation of powerful cross-continental conversations. This symposium will invite renowned global scholars to share their sustainable methodologies and strategies for engaging with archives and material.

Guest speakers include Alberto Manguel, the former director of the National Library in Argentina; Alex Gil, the Digital Scholarship Librarian at Columbia University Libraries; Francesca Giannetti, the Digital Humanities Librarian at Rutgers University–New Brunswick; and Marcy Schwartz, Professor and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

The event will consist of three panels: “Accessing Materials and Data” (9:30am-11:00am), “Creating and Curating Data for Change” (11:30am-1:00pm) and “Maintaining Materials and Data for the Future” (2:30pm-4:00pm). There will be closing remarks and a general discussion from 4:30pm-5:30pm. See the event page for more details.

“Building Bridges with Data” will take place in the Center for Digital Humanities (Firestone Library, Floor B), from 8:30am-5:30pm. Light breakfast and lunch will be served.
