Dr. Seyi Olojo is an interpretive social scientist who studies epistemic cultures in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Her work situates NLP as a sociotechnical practice that mediates postcolonial hierarchies of power within a stratified global political economy of AI. Seyi's dissertation investigated the politics of digitizing and mechanizing African languages, where African language communities hold visions for language revitalization and cultural preservation. In addition to her work on epistemic cultures of computing, she studies the role of technology in the transformation of expertise among knowledge workers like translators and linguists. She considers how technology reshapes epistemological boundaries across expert communities. She received her PhD in information science with a designated emphasis in science and technology studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
