Compensation: $25/hour
Position Summary
The Editorial Assistant will oversee the migration of the Journal of Cultural Analytics from the Scholastica to an Open Source Scholarly Publishing Platform. They will work closely with the editorial board thereafter to streamline workflows, improve organizational infrastructure, and assess the journal’s progress over time. The editorial assistant will learn about all aspects of journal publication, and will have a hand in shaping the future of the flagship journal in computational and data-driven approaches to culture. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in scholarly publishing, digital humanities, humanities & AI, or research administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Workflow & Infrastructure Organization
- Establish standardized workflows with clear documentation (e.g., README files) for editorial processes and contributor communications. Consolidate Dropbox and Google Drive documentation into a single “publication guide.”
- Impact & Progress Evaluation
- Analyze journal performance and editorial initiatives across time, with a focus on assessing progress between the 5- and 10-year marks.
- Synthesize findings in relation to previously stated board goals. Perform submission and publication data analysis and propose initiatives to expand demographic reach.
- Platform Transition Research & Support
- Conduct a deep dive into Janeway, including comparative research on how other journals use the platform. Identify what features or processes can be ported over from Scholastica.
Project Management
Oversee article publication pipeline and help set deadlines and oversee projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with or interest in academic publishing or editorial workflows.
- Familiarity with platforms such as Janeway and Scholastica is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to synthesize and communicate complex information clearly.
- Experience with collaborative tools such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and version control documentation.
- Familiarity with statistics, data-driven research, cultural analytics, computer science, or a humanities discipline required.
