CFP: Data Fellowships

2023–24 Data Fellowships CFP

Eligibility: Princeton faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students from any discipline are eligible. Applicants must be formal Princeton University affiliates for the duration of the grant. Visiting scholars or students are not eligible. Applicants who have received previous CDH awards may apply, but priority for funding may be given to new projects and first-time applicants.

Award details:

• The Fellowship term runs from June 2023 to May 2024.
• Faculty, staff, and postdocs may apply for up to $3,000 to pay Princeton students as research assistants at the suggested rate of $25/hr for graduate students and $15/hr for undergraduates. Priority will be given to faculty who have also applied or plan to apply to UCHRSS for funding (applications due March 15, 2023).
• Faculty are eligible to apply for summer salary of up to $5,000 and must specify in their application which activities will take place June–August. Faculty co-PIs will split the $5,000 summer salary.
• Funds awarded to faculty, staff and postdocs will be transferred to home departments for administration.
• Graduate students who are awarded a fellowship will receive a one-time payment of $5,000 via SAFE.
• Fellowship funds may not be used for travel.

Award obligations: Data Fellows are expected to be engaged in project work throughout the 12-month term of the grant. They are required to attend an orientation session (June) and three data reviews throughout the academic year with CDH staff and/or campus partners such as the Research Data Service or the Map and Geospatial Information Center (October, February, and May). Hellenic Studies Data Fellows will be invited to present their work to the Seeger Center community at some point during the grant term.

Grantees are required to submit a final report at the conclusion of their award, along with a spending report. Unused research funds will be returned to the CDH at the conclusion of the grant period.

While Fellows are primarily responsible for assembling and managing their own research teams, the CDH may assist in finding suitable graduate or undergraduate student research assistants and can provide guidance on project management.

Application process:

The application should describe (in no more than 750 words):

1. The material or collection to be used, and approximate scope (how many items). Indicate if the project requires digitization of Princeton University Library materials. If relevant, please indicate your interest in being considered for a Hellenic Studies Data Fellowship.
2. The main research questions that motivate the choice of material or collection, and current ideas about future applications of the dataset.
3. For faculty and postdocs: the way in which you might use your dataset in the future in an existing class or a new one.
4. For graduate students: the way in which your data work would contribute to your dissertation.
5. Any copyright, privacy, intellectual property or other concerns that might prevent the publication of the data in an open access format.
6. Funding request. Please indicate any other funding secured or requested for this project.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend a grants information session on Wednesday Feb. 15, 12–1pm (in person and on Zoom, see the CDH website for details). You may also contact the CDH for a consultation or dataset review before submission by using our consultation form. Requests for grant consultations must be submitted by February 21, 2023 to ensure that we can meet with you before the application deadline
