DESCRIPTION:\n\n  Matt Kirschenbaum is Distinguished University Professor 
 of English at the University of Maryland\, with appoints in the Department
  of English and an Affiliate Appointment in the College of Information Stu
 dies. He is the author of three books\, most recently Bitstreams: The Futu
 re of Digital Literary Heritage  (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2021
 ). He works in topics across media history and media theory with a particu
 lar focus on writing technologies. Recent academic articles have appeared 
 in PMLA\, Critical Inquiry\, and ELH\; he also writes for popular media
  outlets including the Atlantic\, the Washington Post\, Slate\, Los Ang
 eles Review of Books\, Public Books\, and the Chronicle of Higher Educat
 ion\, among others. With Kari Kraus he founded and directs BookLab\, a mak
 erspace that is a working letterpress printing shop and studio for the boo
 k arts.Meredith Martin (Faculty Director\, CDH\; Professor\, English) wil
 l be the respondent for this event. Her book\, The Rise and Fall of Meter
 \, Poetry and English National Culture\, 1860-1930 (Princeton UP\, 2012)\,
  was the winner of the MLA Prize for a First Book\, the Warren Brooks Priz
 e for Literary Criticism\, and co-winner of the Sonya Rudikoff Prize for t
 he Best First Book in Victorian Studies.This lecture is co-sponsored by th
